Description

Step 1: Call for service and Exterior Evaluation

A recent customer of ours decided to sell his house and had a few chimney issues arise during the home inspection process. The home inspector saw cracks in the chimney crown, some missing mortar between the bricks, and some spalling and flaking brickwork. He needed to get these items addressed prior to closing and called us to see if we could help.We arranged a time for a free exterior evaluation, and showed up to take a look. We set the ladder up saw the same issues the home inspector noticed.Several cracks in the crown were allowing water to leak into the chimney and brickwork below. It had caused some damage to the mortar and started to damage the brickwork. He needed some chimney crown repair and waterproofing of his brickwork.

Step 2: Bid and performance of requested work

After showing the customer the pictures and educating him on what we could do to help him, he decided to have us repair his mortar crown by applying Chimney Saver Crown Coat and help prevent deterioration to his brickwork by applying Chimney Saver Moisture Protection (or waterproofing) to the chimney brickwork. The waterproofing even comes with a 10 year warranty.

We also decided to coat the tops of his “dummy” flue tiles with the crown coat. This is to keep those from deteriorating from water entry. We always tape off the edge of the crown and flue tiles to ensure a nice, clean edge to our crown seal as you can see in the pictures.

Once the crown seal has skimmed over, we remove the tape and touch up any needed spots. We then apply the moisture protection with a pump-sprayer to the exterior brickwork.

There is magic in waterproofing a masonry chimney with Chimney Saver Moisture Protection. It prevents water entry while also allowing any residual moisture to escape the brickwork. This keeps the chimney dry year-round and prevents damage from freezing and thawing for up to 10 years.

If it were up to us, every single brick chimney ever built would be waterproofed because it is extremely effective.

All-in-all, a great little project and another happy customer.
